Day 2: Bangkok to Phuket
[ Sally typing ]
We’re here in Phuket now, a small island off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea.
The day started nicely. We woke up early after our first full nights sleep in probably 4 days. We headed down to the hotel restaraunt for breakfast. The food in Thailand is amazing. Even simple, every day snacks are complex, flavorful concoctions and I can’t help but make comparisons to our shabby American counterparts. Breakfast at the hotel was really good. Some fried noodles, a Chinese dish that’s like soupy rice — basically like grits, but with ginger and a bit spicey. Some tofu, some fresh fruit with yogurt. A great selection of juices.
Oh! And the fruits and fruit juices here are unbelievable! Tommy explained something to me about how there’s a fruit cartel in the States and that’s why we only get particular varieties of citrus. We had orange juice yesterday that I didn’t even realize was orange juice because it was not bitter, not sour or acidic at all, just naturally sweet. Same for the pineapple juice at breakfast this morning — not acidic, just smooth and sweet, YUM!
It was a quick flight down from Bangkok, things went smoothly. We were able to retreive our bikes from the Bangkok airport (they were stowed there in their boxes overnight for a few dollars) and all of our equipment and such made it down here.
We’ve checked into a guest house called Talang Guest House. We’ve got a rooftop rooms with pretty sweet views — we’ll try to upload pics soon if we can. I tried my hand at some basic Thai, telling our hosts “Krop Koon Ka” for “Thank You” — pardon the botched romanized spelling by the way. I guess my pronounciation was pretty bad because they just cracked up laughing at me. This is a great country for trying a foreign language — they are very forgiving! :)
